Obituary

Carl Leroy (Smitty) Smith, 93, of Salem, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Monday, September 19, at Blossom Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born on May 21, 1923 in Salem, the son of the late Clarence Edgar and Minnie (Knisley)Smith. Carl was a loving son, husband and father. He assisted his mother during his teen years by working at the Salem News. After graduating from Salem High School in 1941, he went to work at the Ravenna Arsenal where he loyally served his country during WW11. As a professional, Carl was a journeyman plumber, working at Ellyson Plumbing & Heating until his retirement in 1988. He belonged to the Plumbers and Pipe-fitters Union Local #396 in Youngstown, OH. He was a man of faith and regularly attended the Sebring Church of the Nazarene where he served for many years as Sunday School Treasurer. Carl was Treasurer of the Sebring council of Churches as well as a Trustee of the Sebring Camp Meeting where he devoted countless hours of work. As an avid amateur radio operator (K8BAC), he was a member of and past president of the original Salem Amateur Radio Association. Carl had an inquisitive nature for all technology and during his retirement years enjoyed locksmithing and learned to use a computer. He was always interested in others and spent many mornings in conversations with friends over breakfast and coffee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death on December 25, 1999 by his wife, the former Nola F. Shutler, whom he married on October 8, 1951 and his siblings, Vera (Harry) Feicht, Richard (Ruth) Smith and Harry (Letha) Smith. He is survived by his children, Judith (Richard Ufer) Smith and, Gary (Linda Warner) Smith both of Salem, grandchildren, Joshua (Sunshine Withey) Smith of Fort Wayne, IN and Laura (Mike) Hartman of Uniontown, OH, great-grandchildren Dillan, Kylinn, and Nolan Hartman and Reilly Smith. Services will be held on Friday, September 23, 11:00 AM at the Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services with the Rev. Mike Kimball officiating. Burial will be at Highland Memorial Park in Beloit. A time of visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00 AM on Friday at the funeral home.
