Obituary
Dr. Frank (Francis) Robert John O'Block, 86, of Salem (formerly of Columbiana) passed away at 9:07 pm on Thursday, Sept. 6, at Salem North Health Care Center.
He was born on July 4, 1932, in Greenford, Ohio, the son of the late Frank E. and Barbara (Mikicic) O'Block. He was also preceded in death by his sister Mary Lou Korenich. He is survived by his sister Patricia (Edward) Chizmar of Salem; nieces Michele (Robert) Zwingler and Lori (Frank Doug) Simmons; great-nephew Chad (Alyson) Zwingler; great-niece Natalie (Steve) Holden; and great-great-nieces Payton and Parker Zwingler and Maren Holden.
He was the president of the 1950 graduating class of Greenford High School. Frank was a brick layer apprentice with John Hollinger and attended Salem Trade School. Dr. O'Block served in United States Army from 1952 to 1954. He received a BS from Science of Youngstown State University in 1959 and taught one year at Austintown Public School. He was awarded a National Health and Science Scholarship from Bowling Green State University in 1952 and received a MS in Science in1954, from then served one year internship at Youngstown Public School. In 1955, he was awarded a National Science Foundation scholarship from the University of Illinois, where he was awarded a Doctor of Education Degree. He served a one-year internship at Bradenton-Sarasota, while attending the University of Illinois. Dr. O'Block served as a school psychologist in the Urbana-Champaign School District 1960 through 1966. He then accepted a Chicago State teaching position. While at CSU, he was the Director of Graduate Studies and became a Full Professor of Psychology in 1974.
Dr. O'Block belonged to many local and national organizations, a lifetime member of the American Psychological Association. He was a member of Division 15-School Psychology, Division 16-Counseling, and a charter member of Division 47. Dr. O'Block was an active member of the National Association of School Psychologists and presented many research papers with the Association. He was a member of the National Association of Counselors. He was a licensed School Psychologist and a registered Clinical Psychologist with the State of Illinois. He was a Fellow with the Academy of Forensic Psychology. Dr. O'Block was the CEO of Motivation Training Program for athletics. He worked as a school psychologist at Elim Christian School at Palos, IL, a clinical psychologist at United Cerebral Palsy Center at Joilet, IL, Chicago State Swim team at the Olympics.
Dr. O'Block was hired as an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at Chicago State University. While at CSU, he was the chair of the Department of Advanced studies. Dr. O'Block retired in 1997 after some 37 years of active work. He was granted professor emeritus status after retirement. Dr. O'Block was a member of the School Psychology Board of Trustees at Youngstown State University. He served as President of the Greenford Alumni Association in 2013 and 2014. Dr. O'Block was a very generous donor and gave to Columbiana Library in 2011, Western Reserve Village and YSU, where he established an academic scholarship in School Psychology in 2013. He published numerous articles in professional journals and has authored books of poetry.
Dr. O'Block spent time volunteering at Salem Regional Medical Center and St. Elizabeth – Boardman, writing and antiquing.
The Salem Honor Guard will be rendering military honors at the funeral.
