Gerald (Jerry) D Esterly, 67, of Salem passed away December 31, 2013 at Altercare of Hartville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hartville, Ohio following a lengthy illness. Born on September 22, 1946 in Salem, Ohio, he was the son of the late Rollie R Esterly Jr. and Georgia B. Sinsley Esterly. A graduate of Salem High School in 1965, Jerry joined the U.S. Navy a short time later serving aboard the USS LaSalle. After discharge from the Navy, Jerry attended a year at Kent State University, then worked in a steel mill. He had an infectious smile and laugh and enjoyed life everyday. He loved playing golf, cards, and being with family and friends. He will be dearly missed by those who loved him. He was preceded in death by his companion of twenty years Mary Knight. Jerry is survived by his children, Erica Beagle Stacy of Rootstown, Ohio, Jason Beagle of Salem, Jacob Esterly of Akron, Ohio, one sister , Sandra Spence of Marco Island, Florida, three brothers, Ray Esterly (Helen) of Salem, Richard Esterly (Penny) of Douglasville, Pa. and George Esterly (Linda) of Dallas, Texas, five grandsons and three granddaughters. The family is planning a memorial service to be held in late Spring, 2014. An announcement will be posted closer to the date of the memorial.
