Obituary

Harold Powell Jr. went to his heavenly home on December 2, 2022, after a long illness that ended with congestive heart failure and open heart surgery.

Harold was born in East Palestine, Ohio on February 11, 1942, the son of the late Harold and Edith (Weaver) Powell Sr.

He attended East Palestine High School and graduated in 1961, then served 2 years in the US Army stationed in Panama, which he always said was like "living in a zoo with no cages". Harold was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Petersburg, for over 50 years, holding the positions of deacon and trustee for many years. Harold retired from East Fairfield Coal Company where he operated a drag line and various other heavy equipment. Harold was a jack of all trades and liked working with his hands. Some of his projects were designing and making his own metal lathe and doing woodwork where he made several pieces of furniture. The item he was most proud of was a beautiful dulcimer he made from wood harvested from his property. He restored 5 tractors, a jeep, and a pick-up truck. His pride and joy was a 1936 Case tractor that he took to the Canfield Fair, Columbiana County Fair, and various other events. Harold's latest project was restoring a 1958 T-bird, just like he had when he was first dating Judy. He was also working on a railroad baggage wagon and had even started to build a 2 seater airplane. Harold enjoyed flying and studied to get his private pilot small aircraft license that included instrument rating. He was a member of the Ohio Living VIVO Round Table Woodcarvers of Youngstown where he enjoyed getting together with other members weekly. Harold will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He leaves his beloved wife of 56 years, Judy (Peres) Powell whom he married October 7, 1966. Three sons; H. Michael (Vic) Powell of East Palestine, Mark Powell of New Waterford, and Mathew (Catina) Powell of Petersburg, two grandsons; Aaron and Carter Powell and a granddaughter; Liz (Cameron) Crosby, a sister; Carolyn Yauman of New Springfield, a brother; Donald (Colleen) Powell of Youngstown, an aunt; Carol (Harvey) Smith of New Waterford, four nephews and many cousins.

Services will be held on Monday, December 12, 2022, 11:30 AM at the St. John Lutheran Church in Petersburg. The Salem Honor Guard will render military honors at the beginning of the services, followed by Rev. Ralph Edwards officiating. A time of visitation will be on Sunday from 5-7 PM at the church, and one hour prior to the services on Monday. The burial will be at St. John Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the church and mailed to; St. John Lutheran Church (POB 245) 14394 Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road, Petersburg, Ohio 44454.

Arrangements entrusted to the care of Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services, Salem.
