Thiel
January 30, 1933 – March 10, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Herbert Thiel at the age of 92. He passed peacefully on March 10th in his home in Boardman, Ohio surrounded by his family.
Herb as he was known is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Arlene Thiel of Boardman, Ohio. Son John Thiel and his wife Michelle Thiel, son Thomas Thiel and his wife Annie Thiel, daughter Donna Gaier and her husband Doug Gaier, six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and his sister Betty Mennona. Herb was preceded in death by his sister Helen Thiel and his son Alan Thiel.
Herb was a lifelong resident of New York, born in Queens where he met the love of his life Arlene from the Bronx when they were both working for the telephone company. Once married they moved upstate to the Hudson Valley town of Monroe New York where they raised their family and became charter members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monroe They remained in Monroe until 2022 when they moved to Boardman, Ohio. Herb and Arlene enjoyed 68 short years of marriage filled with many wonderful memories of family and friends, holiday celebrations and taking the entire family camping, going cross country multiple times. They also enjoyed traveling to Hawaii which was their paradise on earth. Herb was an army veteran, and worked his entire career as a telephone equipment installer, working in many buildings in New York City. Herb was an accomplished carpenter and woodworker and completed many projects that are family heirlooms. He enjoyed fishing, doing crosswords and completing various home improvements.
The family wants to express their thanks to Hospice House of Compassus who provided loving in home care during Herb's last weeks. There are no services scheduled at this time.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Greenisen family at the Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services of Salem.
