James Michael Bonfert, 75, of Salem died Friday morning at Salem Regional Medical Center. He was born on May 15, 1940 in Salem, the son of the late Gustave Adolf and Mildred Jane (Moore) Bonfert. He was a lifelong resident of Salem, a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, vice chairman of the Salem Democrats, a Democratic precinct person, and a life time member of the Elks A U.S. Air Force veteran, he was a 1959 graduate of Salem High School. He was self-employed as a engineer and drafting specialist. He had also been a truck driver and two-way radio installer. He was an avid Street Rodder and was instrumental in promoting and growing the Salem Super Cruise and helping to keep it here in Salem. He is survived by his wife, the former Sandra L. "Judy" Gearin whom he married on May 30, 1987; his children, Janie (Andy) Hamlin of Medina and Jillian (Douan) Bingham of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; stepchildren Diana (Bud) Vegila, Brian (Becky Scott) Cramer, Leigh (Ed) Lyons and Scott (Kristi) Koffel, all of Salem; grandchildren, Megan Bonfert, Brendon Rich, Jessica Lyons, Jenna Lyons, Jordon Lyons, Blake Veglia, Brooke Veglia, Douan "Bubby" Bingham Jr., Stetson (Lilly) Koffel and Stephanie Hibbert; great grandchildren, Kaycie and Keaton Good, Bryson Rogowski, Jayden and Damian Hibbert and Grayson Koffel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his sister, Rebecca Domencetti. A funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Monday at Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services, Salem. A time of visitation will be held from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.
