Obituary

Lawrence Junior Frost, passed away peacefully at age 90 on August 31, 2015 at Whispering Pines Village in Columbiana, Ohio where he had been a resident for the last year. Larry was a resident of Salem for most of his life and attended Salem High, where he was known as "Lanky Luke" when he led the basketball team in scoring, but left school on his 18th birthday in 1943 to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he wanted to serve with his brother who was a pilot. It was not until he was on the bus to Fort Bragg North Carolina, that he learned that the Army had decided they needed him more in the infantry . He served during the Normandy invasion with the 79th Infantry Division, where he received a Bronze Star for heroic service in the fighting in the hedgerows near Saint Lo, France. After sustaining injuries in battle, he was transferred to the famous "Red Ball Express," where he drove a truck transporting supplies in General Patton's Seventh Army. Returning from the war, he enrolled at Kent State where he played on the varsity basketball team. His lifelong love of the sport manifested itself in later years when he served as an Assistant to the Coach on the Salem Girls Basketball team, where he became known as the "Team Grandpa." He loved the Lady Quakers and his times with them and their coaches Roger Ziegler and Steve Stewart were some of the happiest of his life. He met and married Lois (Featheringham) Frost while at Kent, and remained married to her until her death 42 years later, never remarrying. He was a very proud father of his daughter Connie (Jim) Price and son Mark (Sharon) Frost who survive him, along with four grandchildren Alison (Robert) Hoskinson, Amanda (Roger Gaskins) Frost, Christin Price, Nathan Price and a great granddaughter Paige Hoskinson. Larry was an active member of the Salem First Methodist Church where he was, until health prevented it, a member of the choir and chair of the Evangelism Committee.
