Melvin Dean Werling
March 6, 1959 – July 2, 2026
SALEM — Melvin Dean Werling, 67, of Salem, peacefully closed his eyes on earth and opened them in heaven at 2:09 PM on Thursday, July 2, 2026, while resting at the Circle of Care in Salem.
Born on a crisp spring day, March 6, 1959, in East Liverpool, Ohio, Melvin was the beloved son of the late James Melvin and Anna Pauline (Wooden) Werling.
Melvin spent many dedicated years working on the shipping and loading docks at Schwebel’s Bakery. While he took pride in his hard work, the greatest blessing of his career came in 1987. It was on those very docks that he met Desi Rickman. What started as a regular workday turned into a lifelong, unshakable friendship spanning nearly four decades. Desi was not just a friend; he was Melvin’s brother in spirit, his rock, and is honored as his only known living survivor.
While we grieve the loss of Melvin’s gentle soul, our hearts find immense joy and comfort knowing the beautiful reunion that took place the moment he passed. For 13 years, Melvin carried a quiet ache in his heart for his soulmate. He is now joyfully reunited with his adored wife, Jacqueline P. “Jackie” (Ruhe) Werling, who preceded him in death on July 6, 2013. He has also finally held the infant son who left this world far too soon, and is wrapped once more in the arms of his loving parents.
Melvin's life reminded us that family isn't just about the blood ties we are born into, but the chosen bonds that hold us together through thick and thin. He leaves behind a legacy of quiet resilience, hard work, and a friendship that stood the test of time.
"Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with heart and soul, there is no such thing as separation."
Rest easy, Melvin. Your shift is over, your heart is full, and you are finally home.
