Obituary

Richard Francis Scarbrough, 80, of Salem, died at 12:09 P.M. on Friday, May 8, 2020, at Mercy Health / St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Youngstown.

He was born on March 12, 1940, in Youngstown, Ohio, son of the late William Robert and Virginia Mary (Rafferty) Scarbrough

He graduated from McDonald High School in 1958, attended Ohio University and graduated from Ashland College with a Masters Degree in Education and Administration. Richard was also a member of Salem St. Paul's Catholic Church.

His teaching/coaching career took off at Mineral Ridge High School, and carried on to Cardinal Mooney, Crestview, and finished as Principal at McDonald School District from which he retired in 1991. During his long and successful career, he taught a variety of subjects, including Math, History, Biology, Physical Education, and Driver's Education. He also served as a football, basketball, and Track coach. He also won a state title in football.

Richard had many interests in life far beyond the scope of education. His love of the outdoors drew him to have a vegetable garden and growing strawberries. He was always an active person and enjoyed bike riding, walking, tennis and an avid golfer. He likes to stay busy with woodworking, jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, and an avid reader. He became a Columbus Blue Jackets hockey fan later in life when visiting their son. Richard also found it exciting to study the odds of horse racing and see the results.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Etta "Trudy" Weber, whom he married on November 25, 1967, two children; Jill Marie (Gary) Six, of Magnolia, Ohio, and Todd Richard (Karen) Scarbrough, of Grove City, Ohio, three grandchildren; Brandon Six, of Newark, Ohio, and Alexandria and Olivia Six, of Magnolia, Ohio, four siblings; Ken (Linda) Scarbrough of Florida, Bob of Michigan, Cathy Scarbrough of McDonald, Ohio, and Tim (Karen) Scarbrough of Florida, Brother-in-law Bruce Weber of Lisbon and sister-in-law Barbara (John) Poland of Columbiana.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no services at this time, but a Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.
