Robert Thomas Banar 94, of Salineville (formerly of Salem) died at 6:27 PM Monday at his home.
He was born on January 13, 1924 in New Brighton, PA, the son of the late Emil Joseph and Catherine Theresa (Zacek) Banar.
He was formerly employed for 22 years at the GM Lordstown Auto Assembly plant as a line worker. Bob was a Corporal and served in the US Army during WW2. He was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart for injuries he had received. He served in the Sicilian and Naples Foggia Campaigns and was held as a Prisoner of War. He was also awarded Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars.
There were many things that he enjoyed in life. In nice weather you could find him out fishing or hunting. Bob was big fan of the Cleveland Indians and Ohio State Buckeyes. He was a big enthusiast of model trains and had built an HO train layout and an avid watcher of courtroom TV shows. The one thing he enjoyed most recently was spending time with his grandson, Jacob.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Louise (Black) Banar, children, Barbara Fink, Roberta Thompson, Melissa Woodard, Melanie Banar, Tiffany Houseman, Lindsay Bedford, Robert Banar Jr. and William Banar, siblings, Edward, Martin, Ernest, Orville and Thomas Banar and numerous grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Rudolph and Emil Banar Jr.
