Obituary

Please note to all readers:

As of January 1, 2023, There will be no more free death notices in any of the Columbiana County newspapers. (Salem News, Morning Journal and E. Liverpool Review) The Youngstown Vindicator will still offer free death listings and service announcements.  Our county papers will now be charging $ 25.00 for a death notice in each  paper it appears.  The obituary can be written and placed in any paper for a fee, if a picture, there will be another fee with the option of color also.  The fees for the costs of the obituaries have also increased.  We have a copy of the letter to offer for the reading.  WE however, will still have the small ad at the bottom of the page in Salem News to list arrangements at no cost to the families. (If the family wants it announced.)  WE have changed the method of listing the deceased we have in on the website.  They will be posted once we have been given permission by the family.  You however, may place your email address in the system to be notified of a new listing of an obituary.

Sally Lou (Rufer) Mason (fna Vaughn) 86, of Salem, died at 3 AM Saturday, December 31, 2022, at Brookdale Senior Living.

She was born on January 7, 1936, in Salem, the daughter of the late Ernest and Opel (Miller) Rufer.

She was a home maker and a "great Mom", but later went to work at Daniel E. Smith Jewelers in Salem. Sally had a real flair for style and furniture. She was a wonderful seamstress and upholster of furniture.

Their home at Seveakeen Lake was a nice get away place for the family. She was an active member of the Salem First Presbyterian Church where she served in numerous positions as well as volunteering.

She is survived by her husband, Harvey Mason Sr., three children: Eric Vaughn of Centennial, Co., Ann (Jerry) Niedzinski of Centennial, CO., and Alesa (Dan) Stehley of Altoona, PA., brother Terry Rufer of Salem, Eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 1986 by her first husband, George Vaughn.
