IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Thomas Brock
Johnson, (Retired) Dds
May 13, 1941 – April 1, 2015
Dr. Thomas Brock Johnson, 74 Thomas Brock Johnson, D.D.S, died peacefully on the morning of Wednesday, April 1st at his home in Salem, Ohio. Tom was born on May 13, 1940 in Jamestown, New York to Merle and Althea Johnson. After graduating from Jamestown High School in 1958, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Denison University in 1962 and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The State University of New York at Buffalo in 1966. While studying at Denison, Tom met Elizabeth "Betsy" Johnson of Salem, daughter of Eugene and Virginia Young. The two spent the first summer of their courtship on the banks of Lake Chautauqua, Betsy working as a waitress at the Athenaeum Hotel, and Tom passing his days in his father's plumbing shop. After his workday ended, Tom often sped across the lake to pick up Betsy in his wooden Lyman Runabout boat. The two wed on June 21, 1964 among the rose gardens of Betsy's childhood home on Highland Avenue in Salem. After earning his degree in dentistry, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Reserve Commissioned Officer and spent two years working in the Dental Detachment Unit in Fort Carson, Colorado. Tom, Betsy and their young son Mark then moved to Salem, where Tom opened his dental practice in a red, three-frame house at 131 South Lincoln. Soon after, Betsy gave birth to Sarah, a daughter, followed later by Daniel, a second son. Over 37 years of practice, Tom built up a loyal patient following and even garnered a "Best Dentist in Salem" award in an area poll during his final years of practice. Above all, Tom prized life with his family, whether attending an Indians game at Jacobs Field, skiing in the Rocky Mountains, or returning to Lake Chautauqua with a ski boat in tow. In 2014, Tom and Betsy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Salem Golf Club with family members. Among the many contributions to his family, Tom provided nearly two decades of steadfast care for Betsy, who has suffered from a degenerative illness. In recent years, Tom visited his wife twice a day at Crandall Medical Center in Sebring, Ohio, to keep her company and assist with meals. Tom is survived by his wife Elizabeth Johnson currently residing in Sebring, Ohio; his son Mark (Parrish) residing in Santa Monica, California; daughter Sarah residing in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; son Daniel (Ebele) residing in Boston, Massachusetts; and sister Patricia (Rod) Ross residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Tom is also survived by four grandchildren: Shayda and Kian, children of Mark and Parrish Johnson; and Olanna and Luka, children of Daniel and Ebele Johnson. Tom was preceded in his death by his parents. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, April 11th at 2 PM at the First Presbyterian Church in Salem. The Reverend Nick Mager will officiate the services. Preceding this memorial service, the family will hold a private burial Saturday morning in Grandview Cemetery with the Salem Honor Guard rendering full honors. Friends may call from 4 to 7 PM on Friday, April 10th at Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services in Salem. The family will also receive friends on Saturday after the services in Fellowship Hall. Friends and family may view this obituary online and share condolences at www.apgreenisenfh.com.
