William R. Castles Jr. 84, of Salem, died at 2:31 PM Thursday at Salem Regional Medical Center. He was born on July 30, 1930 in Hackensack, NJ., the son of the late William R. and Lillian Louise (Albrecht) Castles Sr. He was employed by Lehman Mills until the late nineties as a mechanical engineer. He served in the US Army as a Corporal during the Korean War. He was a member of the Salem First Christian Church, Life member of the Am Vets, American Legion Post 56, Salem UCT 590, helped with Salem Jr baseball, enjoyed his wood shop, bowling and golf. He liked to spend time at Waterworth Park band concerts. The greatest joy in his like was the adoption of his three children. He loved being a grandfather and enjoyed his whole family. He is survived by his wife, the former Alma Gertrude Golderer whom he married on August 9, 1958, his children, Ronald (Pamela) Castles of Salem, Joseph (Ryoko) Castles of Louisville, and Christina Castles-Helman of Columbus, a sister Lois (John) Rubertone of Venice, Fla., grandchildren, Michael and Gregory Shasteen, Diachi, Patrick, Matthew, Sara and Luke Castles, great grandchildren, Bentley, Paisley and Andon Shasteen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson Andrew Shasteen in 2014. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, 10:30 AM at the Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services, Salem. A time of Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. He will receive full military honors at the conclusion of the services by Tom Coffee of the church.
