Obituary

David John Gbur, 67, of Salem, passed peacefully surrounded by family at 12:51 PM on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at Salem Regional Medical Center following a short battle with pneumonia and other underlying health issues.

David was born on December 9, 1955, in Salem, son of the late Thomas Joseph and Irene Elizabeth (Matsuk) Gbur.

David attended Salem Senior high school and graduated in 1974. He was a machinist by trade and also drove truck before retiring and spending time with his family and friends.

Those who knew him, enjoyed hearing his intriguing stories and tales that would captivate any audience. He was a passionate reader of anything he could get his hands on but was especially fond of Clive Cussler novels. If he was not reading there was a good chance he was in the kitchen. Cooking was something he truly enjoyed and in the kitchen it seems he was the happiest. He loved to share recipes and share tips or tricks he learned over the years. He was proud to know that he passed that passion and drive of cooking on to his children. As time shifted he didn’t loose his passion for cooking but changed over to the restaurant expertise. He enjoyed taking day trips just to go try a new sandwich or special at some place he saw on the Cooking Channel. Day trips with him were always an adventure in themselves filled with detours and “scenic routes” often making his passengers wonder if he really knew where he was going.

He was a creative and intelligent man who truly enjoyed to learn anything and everything he could whenever an opportunity arose. This was true up through the end as he was hoping to continue to help educate the future with donating his body for scientific research. Due to unfortunate circumstances he was not able to carry out this request.

David is survived by his four daughters, Diana (Tim) Jones, of Toledo, Samantha (Chad) Formet, of Canton, Carla Gbur, of Salem, and Niki Elwell of Sebring, his sister, Deborah (Bill) Winter, of Salem, he was a proud grandfather of Brycen and Delaney Jones, Beau and Max Formet, and Gage Elwell, as well as his niece and multiple nephews.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brother Thomas Gbur.

There will not be any services held.

Arrangements were made by the Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services of Salem.
