Frederick Purnell Obituary

Frederick Thomas Purnell, 58 of Salem, passed away at 8:10 a.m on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at Salem Regional Medical Center.

He was born on the 4th of July (Independence Day) 1962, in Youngstown, Ohio. He was the son of Fredrick Purnell of Lake Milton and the late Donna (Riskey) Purnell.

Frederick was a graduate of Austintown Fitch High School. Frederick’s passion was cooking. He went to Culinary School and had the good fortune to make a living out of doing what he loved to do most. The most recent kitchen that was graced with his culinary skills was the former establishment; Carol’s on old 62. Whether he was making a living or cooking for his family, that is what he enjoyed doing most. Besides cooking, Frederick was a man of many talents. He was an artist both on the canvas as a painter and on sheet music as a songwriter. He loved music and his favorite style was “Rockabilly”; which is a blend of rock n’ roll, western swing, boogie woogie, rhythm and blues, which was certain to get your toes a tappin’! Frederick played base guitar as a member of several bands over the years that local people may remember, such as, “Rumble Daddy”, “Boarder Line”, “Area 51”, “The DT’s”, and “Spell Bound”. In 1986, while a member of the band “Spell Bound”, he met a young lady that would soon take his name. Frederick and Leslie Ann (AnniChenni) Purnell were wed on September 10, 1988 and shared a beautiful life together for the next 32 years.

He loved to hit the open road on his motorcycles, which were many over the years such as, Yamaha, Honda, Shadow and Goldwing. Frederick was mechanically inclined and very handy when it came to “wrenching on cars”. He was always trying new things and most recently was lending his hand to the art of wood carving. The joy of all that he filled his time with was made all the more special by sharing that time with his family. Frederick enjoyed fishing, but it was spending that time with his son-in-law he looked forward too. Frederick was always looking for an excuse to get the children and grandchildren together. It was these times that he most looked forward to and treasured them dearly in his heart.

In addition to his father and his wife, Frederick is survived by his children; Kara (Mike) Van Horn of Sebring, Nicole Purnell and her fiance William McFarland of Salem, 3 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, siblings; Mark and Mike Purnell.

Along with his mother, Frederick is preceded in death by his son; Freddie Purnell.
