Walter L. “Bing” Newton, 87, of Leetonia, died Saturday March 12, 2022 at the Cleveland Clinic surrounded by his family.
He was born in Washingtonville Ohio, to the late Theodore and Loretta Newton. He graduated from Leetonia High School and Kent State University, later teaching science at Crestview and Salem Middle School and coaching high school track at Salem. Bing started and sponsored the Wayne Russell track meet for many years where athletes from around the state came to Salem to compete. His success as a track coach was recognized by his induction into the Salem High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Bing was a friend to all and a mentor to many. He felt a strong calling to lead others to Christ. One could say that Bing led a full life. During his school years he was active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He founded and organized the Jesus the Key ministry-a Christmas break Christian retreat for teens After retirement he helped found and lead the Men of Faith-a group of Christian men who met for breakfast monthly, and Men’s Rally in the Valley, an annual event with Christian speakers and musicians. He felt very strongly about and supported Teen Challenge. Bing went on several mission trips to Russia with Josh McDowell ministries. His family takes comfort that a good and faithful servant is now resting in the arms of Jesus.
Bing is survived by his wife of 65 years; Peggy, sisters-in-law; Sally Hill and Delores Newton, daughter; Debbie (Dan) Schloemer of Willard, OH, sons; Chip (Bonnie) of Leetonia; Lance of Canfield, grandchildren; Mandy, Mark, Matt, Luke, and Mara, great grandchildren; Lily, Dayne, Tate, Mitch, Quincy, and Eliza.
In addition to his parents, Bing was preceded in death by a brother; Gary, sister-in-law; Shirley Richards, and brother-in-law; Bob Hill.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2022, at 10 AM at the Greenford Christian Church with Rev. John Bush and Rev. Tim Ginter officiating. A time of visitation will be held on Friday from 3-7 PM at the church as well as 9-10 AM Saturday. The burial and committal service will take place at Oakdale Cemetery for only the immediate family.
