Obituary

William Roger Hilles (1951–2026)

William "Bill" Roger Hilles, 74, of Salem, passed away on February 6, 2026, leaving behind a legacy as steady and reliable as the rock and roll music he loved.

Born in Salem on August 16, 1951, to the late Burton Leroy and Charlotte Ella (Langties) Hilles,

Bill grew up with a grounded spirit and a heart that didn't need many words to show its depth. For 22 years, he was a hardworking and familiar face as a forklift driver for W.M. Inc. in Washingtonville. When he retired in 2010, he didn't just leave behind a career; he left a reputation for being a man of integrity and grit.

Bill was a "quiet man," but his silence was filled with kindness. He found his greatest joy in life's simple rhythms—the perfect arc of a golf ball, the thrill of a Cleveland Browns or Guardians game, and the comfort of his favorite classic rock songs. Whether he was talking sports or simply enjoying the peace of his home, he did so with a gentle nature that made everyone around him feel at ease. He was a man of simple pleasures and deep loyalties, preceded in death by his cherished companion, his dog Sammie, who was undoubtedly waiting for him with a wagging tail.

Bill's warmth and memory will be carried on by his large and loving family. He is survived by his sisters, Patricia Pim of Salem, Pamela and her husband Michael Flinn of Minerva, and Cheryl and her husband Jeff Martin of Columbiana. He also leaves behind his brothers, James and his wife Margaret Hilles of Berlin Center, Gary Hilles of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Roger Hilles of Marlboro, as well as many nieces and nephews who will forever remember their uncle's kind soul and hardworking hands.

Arrangements: Professional services have been entrusted to the care of Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services, Salem, Ohio.
