W. S. Arbaugh founded the Arbaugh Funeral Home in 1901. Mr. Arbaugh also operated the W. S. Arbaugh Furniture Store on the North East corner of E. State Street and N. Lincoln in Downtown Salem.


In 1920, Elmer Hendricks, of the Hendricks Funeral Service in Greenford, Ohio came to Salem and operated his funeral home out of Arbaugh's building. He remained on the staff for many years.


In 1926, W. R. Pearce joined the staff of the funeral home. The funeral home evolved into a distinct and separate business. Mr. Pearce purchased the funeral business and the current house in which the business resides on January 3, 1938. At that time the business name became the Arbaugh-Pearce Funeral Home.


The Arbaugh's continued to operate the furniture store at East State and Lincoln Ave.


Over the years, the funeral home has had several long term employees including; Otis Flick, Lowell Ewing, and Pearl Keonreich.


Ray J. Greenisen, after having served his country in WWII; graduating in 1950 from Cleveland College of Mortuary Science, Cleveland, Ohio, returned to Salem in 1953 to join the staff of the Arbaugh-Pearce Funeral Home as a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer.


On January 1, 1977 Mr. Greenisen purchased the business which at that time became the Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen Funeral Home.


In addition to attending Kent State University - Salem campus, Ernest J. Greenisen, Ray's oldest son, graduated from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science located in Pittsburgh, PA in 1978. Upon receiving his State of Ohio Funeral Director license and State of Ohio Embalmer license he joined the funeral home staff.


Robert (Bob) M. Greenisen is Ray Greenisen's youngest son. A 1985 Salem High School graduate, Bob also attended Kent State University - Salem Campus. In 1990 he graduated from the Pittsburgh Institute Of Mortuary Science located in Pittsburgh, PA. From the time Bob was a teenager he was an active part of Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen Funeral Home. Prior to receiving his Ohio Funeral Director and Ohio Embalmer licenses, you could find him assisting with yard work, delivering funeral home chairs and tables to Salem families for: family gatherings, yard sales, community service projects, weddings,...etc.



After achieving his necessary licensing Bob jumped into the family business with two feet.


In the Spring of 2016, Ray Greenisen passed away leaving his son’s to run the family business.


The son’s, Ernest and Bob, are Ohio licensed Funeral Directors/Embalmers.
